Well its finally here. The long awaited JCAP report summary came out on February 12th and now
we can all work together to dispel the myths about women’s academic underachievement. Claire
Murray, Aimi Bleasdale and I have written a publication entitled Ladies First: women’s
guide to getting a first. It stresses that women may have different ways of defining
success, but women should be given all the support available, should they decide they want a
first. Gender should not affect one’s exam grade and CUSU will be campaigning for many things
including mandatory supervisor training. This booklet provides useful advice on stress
management, study skills and assertiveness as well as subject specific advice. There is an
arts edition and an science edition. It has a preface from the Vice Chancellor, as well as
important advice from Dr Chris Mann, the author of the JCAP report. I hope it will help a lot
of women, and is available from your women’s officer or academic affairs officer. |
